Family history and genealogy are among the world’s most popular hobbies. Family history is the second biggest subject on the Internet, with sites receiving billions of hits per year. More than 250,000 Australians are members of family history related organisations.

With the advent of new technology and the internet, discovering one’s family history has become more accessible and easier to research. Many records, including first fleet records, census data from the 1800’s and earlier, military records, and births, deaths and marriages, are now searchable online.  The workshops will share some of the most useful sites and tips on how to research online.

Family History Week is also a reminder to everyone who has an interest in family history to talk to their grandparents and older relatives before it’s too late and gather photos and information. The workshops will also introduce some free software that makes recording and sharing family stories easy for even computer novices.
