  • There were a number of major updates from Microsoft including several optional updates, one of which was Windows Live Essentials (for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7). If you choose to install Windows Live Essentials, be warned, this collection of programs is a 166MB install and the individual programs include: Windows Live Call, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Toolbar, Windows Live Family Safety and Windows Live Movie Maker (this program is not available for Windows XP).
  • I personally have been using both Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Photo Gallery for sometime and last week’s updates surprised me with the number of improvements that has now been added to both programs. If you are using Outlook Express as your email client, you will find Windows Live Mail the better choice, because of its added functionality and flexibility. If you would like to know more about the Windows Live Essentials package and the other optional updates (i.e. Microsoft Office Outlook Connector, Office Live Add-in and Microsoft Silverlight) go to (http://download.live.com) or better still, why not come to one of our weekly computer classes on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoon.
  • Finally, Windows PowerShell 1.0, this is last optional Windows update this month, but in my opinion this command line shell and scripting language should only be downloaded by experienced users (i.e. System Administrator), because if used incorrectly, it can cause major complications for your operating system, software and data.
  • Windows Live Photo Gallery is one of the image editing programs which we will discuss and use in our Digital Photography course for Beginners along with Paint.NET, Photo Story 3 (for Windows XP), GIMP and Google’s Picasa3.
