Facebook and CyberSafety May 29, 2010

Facebook is a diary, a picture album, an online chat room, a blog, an email facility, an interactive ‘games room’ and many more things.

Facebook can be totally public – for example Michael Moore’s page with a very large number of fans (search Google for it!) or very private, with a small number of invited friends only.

A social media strategist says parents need to talk to their children about their use of social networking sites after an 18-year-old Sydney teen was allegedly killed by someone she met through Facebook. Click here to see the story.

The problem is that most parents know less than their children and many children, despite their confidence, know too little! Data mining is absurdly easy. So, as well as the kind of risk in the above incident, many kids are setting themselves up for future “Lara Bingle” moments, or scrutiny by future landlords, employers or credit providers.

Are you worried and confused by the media coverage, and unsure what you need to do to keep your kids safe? Why don’t you do a CTC Facebook Settings session and let us work with you to set up a Facebook account with appropriate privacy settings. Then you will be able to help your kids change their privacy settings on their Facebook Account.

www.ReclaimPrivacy.org  also has a handy bookmarklet that shows which potentially insecure and privacy-invading settings are enabled on your Facebook account.

Contact the CTC now and let us know whether you would like to attend a FREE 1 hour session on using Facebook and getting the privacy settings right. Phone 63298210. We will arrange a time to suit the majority of the participants.

You are quite welcome at your local CTC (48 Ross St – we share with the Visitor Information Centre) for all your online needs. We have a high speed internet connection, up to date computers, friendly staff and a quiet atmosphere.

Please contact the CTC on 6329-8210 for any online course needs, in-house courses and computer maintenance. Please visit our website www.ctcoberon.wordpress.com  for more information
